The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day at Unity Academy was 'How can life go on?' and last Friday 27th January all our year 8 students took part in a super learning day investigating this theme.

This day involved the students working in Unity house teams in a variety of activities including watching the National Live Broadcast by Mala Tribich, a Holocaust survivor. The day also illustrated the resilience of Holocaust survivors which mirrors one of our FCAT core values. All students finished the day by making a pledge to carry forward what they have learned.

Mrs Stobbs Head of Humanities, said: "The students were a credit to the Academy and their houses. They approached every task with enthusiasm and they quality of work each house has produced is excellent. I look forward to watching the students putting their pledges into practice."

Cody Milnes: “During HMD2017 (Holocaust Memorial Day 2017) I enjoyed learning about the Holocaust from a survivor's point of view. It was good because as well as talking about what she did during the Holocaust Mala also answered questions from the UK and even people from Portugal. I enjoyed working with people from our year and also loved competing for our house.”

Morjane Benhelal: “I enjoyed the topic. I really liked when we watched the live broadcast with Mala. The activities we did were really fun and I have learned a lot from it. The activity we did at the very beginning was very good to help us understand more.”

Paige Langford: “I liked all the activities and doing work to learn what the Jews went through. I enjoyed learning about Mala and what she went through. I learned a lot about the purpose of Holocaust Memorial Day.”

Ellie Parkinson: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a special day to remember the lives of the Jews that died. I have enjoyed learning about this topic and all about the people who saved lives.”

Adam Ferguson: “I liked how much teamwork was involved as we created and put all our knowledge on a Holocaust sheet. I also enjoyed the live broadcast. I learned many facts about the Holocaust such as how Jews were treated and different viewpoints on Holocaust survivors. This is a great form of learning.”
