Just before Christmas, Lancaster University brought their "From the very big to the very small" roadshow to Unity Academy to educate, entertain and inspire the future Physicists from Year Ten.
Undergraduate students presented Physics in a friendly, fun way showing us the wonders and size of the universe and how cool Physics really is...-273oc! The coldest place in the world is Lancaster!

At first astronomy students astounded us with numbers that were extremely large,  explaining the size of our universe and where we fit into it. They highlighted the beautiful nature of the universe, the
wonders of what might be out there along with our unique but small identity.

Since space is extremely cold this linked to the second low temperature student who wowed us with the "cool" stuff. The properties of liquid nitrogen were put to the test with our students getting
involved in making rubber ring and levitating magnets. We learned about the use of super conducting magnets in the Japanese " Bullet" train getting to grips with a demonstration showing how it floats
round the track.

Finally our demonstrators switched to the very small and a little bit of chemistry, the study of atoms - a very eye catching demonstration of how different compounds are differently coloured, best with the lights
out.
This was followed by how we can use chemistry to weld......sorry to the rest of the school for setting of the fire alarm!  At least  we discovered our smoke detectors are rather sensitive, normally a good thing!
