Making time for subjects outside the core subjects of English, Maths and Science is not always an easy task in a busy primary years curriculum. However, that’s exactly what Unity Academy’s primary did recently. Design Technology Day, a termly event at Unity Academy, involves giving all primary aged students the opportunity to boost their wider knowledge and understanding of all things DT. This year, the children all took part in various tasks and activities relating to different countries of the world.

One of four workshops had students making use of the school’s Food Technology facilities and cooking up delicious onion soup with home-made bread.

Another two, entitled “Tasting France” and “Tasting China” involved the pupils trying new foods native to the respective countries, ranging from brioche, pain au chocolat and macaroons in France to prawn crackers, spring rolls and noodles in China!

The final workshop focused on Spain, where the students juiced fresh fruit and created their very own Spanish style paper lanterns to create a fiesta display across school corridors.

Tyler Butt, Year 3 said: “I didn’t really have a favourite food, I liked it all. The only thing I did not like was the smell of the French coffee beans. When I went to France, I tried snails and loved them too!”

Primary Vice-Principal, Beth Latham said: “In today's fast paced technology rich world, we often rely on convenience products to make life easier but this has led to a lack in knowledge about where food comes from and how it is made. The children preparing, making and tasting their own food has allowed them to learn about food and its origins in an enjoyable and memorable way. It was great to see the delight and pride on their faces knowing that the food they were trying had been made by them!
