Subject - Child Development

This course is taught in Key Stage 4. It is designed for students who intend to work with, or have an interest in, children up to the age of 5.

There are five areas of study.  These are parenthood, pregnancy, diet, Health and Care of the child, Child Development and Support for Parents and Children 

The course is designed to be all inclusive , with the possibility of taking home a ‘living doll’ for the weekend to experience the realities of having a baby !

What will I study?

This course helps candidates to develop an understanding of the overall needs of young children and the social and environmental influences which affect their development in a contemporary, changing and multicultural society.

You will study:

  • Parenthood
  • Pregnancy
  • Diet, health and care of the child
  • Development of the child
  • Support for the parent and child

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is made up of three parts:

  1. A final exam (40% of the total mark)
  2. A research task (20% of the total mark)
  3. A child study (40% of the total mark)

 

Where does it lead?

GCSE Child Development will be of particular benefit to students wishing to pursue courses which require a knowledge and understanding of child development beyond GCSE, at AS/A level and/or GNVQ/VCE in a variety of subjects e.g. Psychology, Health & Social Care. It will also provide opportunities for further progression to employment and/or further and higher education.
