You will learn all the basic aspects of Painting & Decorating including; Stripping and hanging various types of wallpaper, measuring for materials, working out the area and costing, preparing woodwork and walls for various paint systems, glazing windows. You will use various types of hand tools. You will also learn woodworking skills and other aspects of the construction industry.

This course is available for Year 9 to 11 students who may want to gain entry into college for further study of the Construction trade. During the course the students will practise various construction based skills and work on several projects. You will gain knowledge on project planning and health and safety roles within the industry.

Why do this course?

The course could help you to gain entry into college for further study of the Construction trade, engineering and project management. During the two years you will work in the Academy’s specialised Construction workshop, practising the skills from the course and working on various projects. The work and assessment in this course are mainly physical. This allows all pupils to access the course and achieve high grades.

What will I study?

You will be made aware of Health and Safety regulations and legislation, how to risk assess potential hazards and what safeguards and protective equipment you can use to minimise accidents.
You will learn all the basic aspects of Painting & Decorating including; Stripping and hanging various types of wallpaper, measuring for materials, preparing woodwork and walls for various paint systems, glazing windows. You will use various types of hand tools, brushes and rollers. You will also learn woodworking skills and other aspects of the construction industry.
Finally you will learn about managing a construction project, including the different roles in the construction industry, the main steps of building and how to allocate times to each task in order to complete the build as efficiently as possible.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments will be based on set practical tasks with clear written instruction. The assessor will ask questions on completion of the task to see how much knowledge and understanding you have of each subject. You will also be required to complete a written examination towards the end of the course on the safety and security elements.

Other information

You will need to bring an old top to wear while working. Overalls will be provided or you can bring some with you (white only). All other materials will be provided.

Where does it lead?

Students can go on to study Construction at college when they leave school or they might be able to gain employment.
