Students in all Phases at Unity are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the Art world. They are encouraged to develop the following skills:

  • Creativity - how they use and experiment with a range of materials to produce images.
  • Competence - how they develop their technical knowledge and processes to complete and improve their work.
  • Cultural Understanding - how they discuss and appreciate the work of artists from various times and cultures and use their understanding to develop their work further.
  • Critical Understanding - how they have used the techniques and ideas of various artists and adapted them to enhance their own work.

Phase 1

Our students are encouraged to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop their imagination. They will be encouraged to look at the differences and similarities between the work of a range of artists. They will also be asked to use a range of materials to creatively design and make products inspired by the work of these artists. Whilst doing this they will develop a wide range of art and design techniques using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Phase 2 and 3

Our students are encouraged to develop their understanding of different kinds of art, craft and design. They will be asked to use sketch books to record and review their ideas. Their projects will be based on the work and techniques of past and present artists and designers. Whilst doing this, they will be developing their creative and experimental use of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture, using materials such as pencil, charcoal and paint.

Phase 4

Our students are encouraged to use a range of techniques whilst developing ideas related to a variety of starting points over the year. They will use a range of techniques and media, including painting to develop their ideas. They will use sketchbooks to produce ideas, which will then be developed into larger scale pieces of work. They will be given the opportunity to analyse and evaluate artwork from various periods and styles, using this work as inspiration for their own pieces of work and increasing their ability in the handling of different materials at the same time.
