Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance
The careers coordinator, Mr S Brennand (Senior Vice Principal), will manage the careers education programme within school. Administrative work is carried out by Mr A Wood.
During the academic year of 2019-20 the Careers service at Unity Academy will be organising many visits to further and higher educational establishments, together with some great information gathering experiences at various Careers conventions ; Manchester (Yr 9 & 10) & Blackpool Pleasure Beach (Yr,8 & 9). We also provide weekly independent advice and guidance conversations for all years 8, 9, 10 & 11. The local colleges come in to deliver some exciting days of teambuilding and STEM activities, also being part of the mock interviews and weekly lunchtime drop in sessions. During careers week Phase 1 & 2 will be enjoying a mini careers fair on which their writing week will be based..
Year 5 will enjoy the experience of Professor Fluffy again this year, delivered by the University of Cumbria and year 6 will join us for a lecture by Dr. Kirsten Dickers from the University of Cambridge.
During the PD careers lessons we continue to use the great software that helps young people investigate their personality traits and their suitably to particular career paths. This can support the process of our students thinking about their future as research has shown that having a focus helps drive ambition.
Year 8 options evening will have a broad range of careers advice available for the young people to ask questions about different routes and the GCSE’s they will require to follow their own personal career journey.
The year nines continue to be offered the unique chance of work day placements with our members of staff. The choices are: shadowing teachers from primary, secondary and the Principal, catering, administration and health & safety. This has proved very successful in the past, with some year nines completing 3 days over two terms. This will continue to run next year as it has proved useful for the student to help them make informed option choices about their future.
The years 11’s have the opportunity from GP Strategies to complete some extra work experience or qualifications over the summer holidays and a third of the year group have signed up. This shows that our young people are in the right mind set to be successful; this comes from a well-rounded education and good aspirational careers education. In November this was again acknowledged, as we were lucky enough to be nominated for the careers aspiration award at the Gazettes Education Awards.
Moving forward we now have a dedicated careers room which is open every lunch-time for the students to come and enquire and research about careers, get help with CV’s and application forms. Our continuing partnership with The Imperial Hotel has meant that we have already completed a career journey with some year 10’s and we have some exciting opportunities ahead of us.

A Stable Careers Programme
- Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by Students, parents, teachers, governors and employers.
Learning from Career and Labour Market Information
- Every Student and their parents should have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make the best use of available information
Addressing the Needs of Each Student
- Students have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each Student. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.
Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers
- All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of careers paths.
Encounters with Employers and Employees
- Every Student should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.
Experiences of Workplaces
- Every Student should have first-hand experience of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing, and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.
Encounters with Further and Higher Education
- All Students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.
- Every Student should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a careers adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all Students but should be timed to meet their individual needs.
Post 16 Pathways and Progression
All young people in England must continue in education or training until 18 years of age. Young people have the following choices at the end of year 11:
- Full time study at a college, sixth form or training provider
- Full time work or volunteering combined with part time education of training
- An apprenticeship
- A traineeship
As part of our careers programme, year 11 students are provided with a one to one guidance interview with a qualified careers advisor. Parents are welcome to attend these meetings.
Students and parents of students in year 8-11 can request a careers guidance meeting at any point, directly via a form tutor, Mr Wood or Head of Year.

- is an online careers learning tool which can be used to explore future career and education options. It can also be used by parents. The registration code for Castle View Enterprise Academy is 39525. The site includes a range of short three minute videos to help students explore a range of careers.
- The provides information, advice and guidance to help students make decisions on learning, training and work opportunities. The service offers confidential and impartial advice and is supported by qualified careers advisers. You can chat with an adviser using webchat (8am to 10pm, 7days a week). Measuring the impact of our careers programme
The Academy’s progress towards achieving the Gatsby Benchmarks is evaluated using the online Compass tool. This is carried out on an annual basis by the Careers Leader.
Provision is also monitored through regular feedback from students, staff, governors and our partners. This feedback is collected through questionnaires and focus groups following key careers activities and at the end of each academic year. This is analysed by the Careers Leader with actions fed back to staff via CEIAG team meetings.
External provision is monitored and evaluated through the Academy’s Quality Assurance procedures including observations, work scrutinies, student, and if appropriate parental, voice. This is analysed by the Careers Leader with actions fed back to staff via CEIAG team meetings. Key action points are also included in Academy development plan.
The effectiveness of our careers guidance will be reflected in the higher numbers of students progressing to positive destinations such as apprenticeships, technical routes, sixth form colleges, further education colleges, universities or employment. Destination data (Dfe) is used to assess how successfully students make the transition into the next stage of education or training, or into employment and to inform future CEIAG provision. This is analysed by the Careers Leader with key trends and actions fed back to SLT and Governors. Action points are also included in the Academy development plan.
A designated governor has responsibility for overseeing the quality of careers guidance. The Careers Leader reports to the Governor for CEIAG on a termly basis with a one to one meeting and a formal written report.
The CEIAG policy is reviewed on an annual basis by the Careers Leader. This is ratified by Governors.
