My Place Youth and Community Centre

On Tuesday 13th September, 2 year 7 students set off to the new My Place Youth and Community Centre which is being built on St Anne’s Road adjacent to Palatine School.

They thought that they were going to meet David Lund (Executive Director) for a photo shoot for The Gazette about new Year 7 starters.

However, they were in for a surprise when they arrived at the centre which is to be called Southpoint, as the construction company, Conlon’s had arranged for all the students present to have a tour of the building site.

All the visitors were kitted out in safety equipment, including work boots, high visibility jackets and hard hats!

Southpoint will be a state of the art hub for Youth activity in Blackpool and this was a great opportunity for our students to see the amazing space that will be on offer for them to access when it opens its doors in Spring 2012.

The building is a really innovative design and the space will house entertainments, youth activity clubs and a café with outside plaza!

Just imagine what amazing events will be held in the “pod” – from cinema nights to music gigs and so much more.

Southpoint has been designed in consultation with young people to make sure that it really meets the needs of what they want , and they have had a hand in the colour schemes, furnishings, lay out and what will happen in there.  Young people will also be involved in running the centre when it opens.

The visit gave us all a real insight into the scale of the building and we all left waiting in anticipation for it to open.  Any young people who want to be involved in the further development of Southpoint should visit  www.rubothered.co.uk which is a website run by young people for young people.  This site will give you all the information you need to know about getting involved and having a say in young people’s developments in Blackpool.

You can also follow them on twitter @rubothered and @bpsouthpoint to keep an eye on the progress of the centre.

Before we left, the students did have their photo taken with other Year 7s from across the town and this picture will appear in The Gazette on Saturday.
