World Book Day

On Thursday 3rd March, Unity College Blackpool celebrated World Book Day by taking part in a number of activities based on teenage fiction. Students in Key Stage 3 & 4 worked industriously in their English lessons and produced imaginative texts, showcasing their creative talents.

The focus of this year’s objective was a book called ‘Unique’ – a book where a young boy named Dominic discovers a mind-blowing secret about his past and faces a steep challenge in convincing those around him that he isn’t the person they think he is.

After reading an extract from the book, students in years 7, 8 and 9 had to empathise with the main character and discuss his emotions. Using an opening line from the World Book Day website, they were then tasked with creating a diary entry from his perspective – and the result was a number of exceptionally written pieces of literature.

The project was a huge success in raising the awareness of literacy in the school and each student thoroughly enjoyed the lessons. For their efforts, they all received a book token to spend on a fictional book of their choice.

In year 11, GCSE students were given a brief to improve reading skills and engagement in Year 7. They had to choose an interactive short-story from the internet and create an active reading resource which could be used in English lessons and engage younger students in literature. The work they produced was of high quality – both visually and in a challenging nature.
Mr. Moon, who ran a number of the lessons, said, “World Book Day was a big success. The younger students were really hooked with the text we used as a stimulus and this allowed them to produce lovely, empathetic pieces of work.”

“The Year 11 students were also a credit to the school and it was good to see them putting something back into English and helping staff raise literacy standards. For their efforts, they were all given a letter of commendation for their contributions to the project, which is something positive they can take to their college interviews next week.”
