2010/11 League Champions Review!

Football Winners

The Year 10 Football Team pulled off a massive feat last week when they were crowned champions of the Blackpool Schools’ Football League. Fantastic performances from everyone in the squad helped the team achieve success, with 6 wins out of 6.

All the lads put in 110 % effort, beating schools much bigger in size than us. Particularly eye-catching results were triumphs over St Georges (8-4 - a 12 goal thriller which was 5-4 to Unity until the dying embers of the game), Palatine (5-1 - a great attacking display) and Collegiate (7-2).

The 5-0 thrashing of Highfield was arguably our best performance all year and saw us beat our rivals 5-0 for the second time at home. Everyone showed commitment and we didn’t give the opposition time to settle on the ball. After a forfeited tie with Montgomery, where the condition of the pitch was disputed, we met a strong St Mary’s team for the title. Thankfully we took our chances and made them count, eventually running out 6-1 winners, although the score line deceived what was a very close game.

Every game involved a lot of fantastic goals, saves and amazing fair tackles. We adopted the Ian Holloway approach of ‘attack, attack, attack’, with Tom Barton-Rossall, Thomas Adams and Jamie Marshall helping us score 34 goals in the process. The likes of Otis Lewis-Chambers, Robert Cousins and Josh Jones held the midfield together and supplied for fantastic opportunities for our strikers.

Our defence included Joe Sutcliffe, Adam Jeffery and Ben Atkinson, who along with our two goalkeepers Martin Campbell and Mathew Jones, proved to be solid brick walls for the opposition. The team was supported by new additions Andrew Moy, Sam Bethell, Chris Hubbard and Jake Harker, and these boys helped strengthen the squad.

A special thank you to Mr. Moon for managing us and Mr. Barnes for arranging our games. We will now go down in history as the first team to win a league as Unity College!
