What is the Sports Premium?

The primary PE and sport premium was introduced in March 2013 to improve the provision of physical education and school sport in primary schools across England. The £150 million per year funding is provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health, and Culture, Media and Sport (DfE, DH, DCMS). The funding is allocated directly to primary schools and is ring-fenced. This means it may only be spent on improving the provision of PE and sport in schools. In February 2014 the government committed to continue the funding until 2020.

We will make sure these improvements are sustainable by continuing to raise the profile of PE and Sport across the academy as a tool for whole school improvement. The funding spent on CPD and a new scheme of work will upskill staff subject knowledge and allow a progressive and sustainable plan.

Below are the details of how many pupils within our year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, can use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

The importance of PE (curriculum statement)

Physical education develops learners’ physical competence and confidence, and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It promotes physical skilfulness, physical development and a knowledge of the body in action. Physical education provides opportunities for learners to be creative, competitive and to face unto different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles. Pupils learn how to THINK in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive and challenging activities.

They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their quality and effectiveness. Through this PROCESS learners discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences, and make choices about how to get involved lifelong physical activity.

Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through employing specialist PE professionals, training our staff across our wide and varied curriculum, providing cross curricular links and developing their all round subject knowledge. Providing more opportunity for in house competition and competitive sports competitions across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
