History

History at Unity College Blackpool is taught by 3 subject specialists. Each of the three classrooms are equipped with televisions and videos and there has recently been the installation of an interactive whiteboard in the department. The department also shares the use of a humanities based ICT room with 15 workstations.

The year 7 pupils start by addressing the question of what is history. They also cover the Roman Empire and the Medieval Realms 1066 - 1500.

In year 8 the pupils cover the making of the United Kingdom 1500 - 1750, and Britain 1750 - 1900.

By year 9, the topics are the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Twentieth Century World and includes a trip to Manchester to see the play the Time Tunnel.

GCSE

At GCSE pupils study Modern World history which covers the causes of World War One, Trench Warfare, the Home Front, the causes of World War Two and the Cold War. Two in depth studies include Germany 1919-1939 and the USA 1919-1941. Two pieces of coursework are completed, one on the Battle of the Somme and the other on the war in Vietnam. There is also a trip to Manchester to see the play Hitler on Trial, and there is an exam busting workshop to help the pupils in answering their exam questions.
