French
In the modern languages department we aim to provide pupils with a learning environment resolutely modern and European. In the 21st century, Europe is a reality in which pupils need to play their part as a working European citizen. Learning a foreign language is no longer a luxury but a necessity; not just to enjoy holidays, but to promote careers. In a tourist resort such as Blackpool, confidence in using foreign languages will give pupils opportunities to work in hotels, the catering industry, conference centres, travel agencies and tourist operators. Multi-National companies in the local area such as British Aerospace, Alstom and ICI now require their employees to go through foreign languages training.
GCSE
GCSE French is studied at either higher or foundation level. The topics should be familiar to pupils such as personal information, school, leisure and sports, holidays and future careers. For the study visit to France in the summer term, year 10 language pupils are recruited as monitors. At the end of the course, the final exam covers the 4 skill areas.
